Scott Fliegelman
Head Coach
Scott Fliegelman - Executive Director/Head Coach, USA Triathlon Level 1 Coach, 2006 USA Triathlon All American

Scott founded FastForward Sports to provide an unparalleled experience for all who aspire to endurance sports training and racing. Scott hand selects and trains the Coaching Staff, and works closely with each and every runner throughout the season. He sets the vision for the Group Run Training model, and has established a professional and fun-filled community of runners and coaches working together to reach their goals. Together with Technical Director Bobby McGee, Scott crafts challenging training schedules with an understanding of how best to fit workouts into our regular lives.
Scott prepared for the rigors of competitive running and triathlon through a carefully blended combo of collegiate tennis and professional snowboard racing. After running in his first Bolder Boulder 10K, he began a shift away from “skill” sports, and started in earnest down the path of suffering known as endurance sports.
With his running improving quickly and a few years of mountain bike racing behind him, the jump to triathlon seemed a logical choice. Only 5 weeks from the Boulder Peak Triathlon, he swam his first length of a 25-yard pool, with the intention of getting to the other side “in a hurry”. After 22 yards of splashing about and holding his breath under water, he walked the final 3 yards in shallow water, and collapsed out of breath on the pool deck. Thanks to the help of a wetsuit, and some well-needed expert swim coaching, Scott completed his goal at Boulder Peak that year, and “came out of the water unassisted!” Only a month later, Scott entered his second tri, the Harvest Moon Half Ironman. “It seemed like a reasonable progression…” he said. Standing on the banks of the Aurora Reservoir at 6 a.m., 29 degrees, light snow, and a refreshing breeze, Scott somehow felt strangely at home… less than two years later he became an Ironman (and then again in 2005 at Ironman Florida in 10 hours, 29 minutes).
With real world, adult-learned experiences like these behind him (and ahead), and significant professional experience as Head Pro of the Sugarbush (VT) Tennis School, as a PSIA Certified Ski and Snowboard Clinician, retail shop owner, and years of marketing and program development in the Ski and Outdoor Business, Scott decided to share his newfound passions with others and develop a world-class Training Program for “aspiring and perspiring” athletes. Since 2002, Scott has hired, trained, and managed a staff of over 50 uniquely qualified Coaches, and worked closely with over 2,000 athletes in Boulder, Denver, and around the U.S. He and his staff have combined to help participants reach their goals from 5K to marathon, triathlon to pentathlon, and especially toward a life of better health, fitness, and self-image.

Coaching/Life Mission & Vision:
To help everyone live their dreams and discover the greatness within them. We do this using Triathlon (and running) as the vehicle…living your dreams is about knowing your dreams. Once identified, it becomes about setting goals, creating a plan on how you are going to accomplish those goals, training intelligently, racing aggressively, recognizing success, and realizing that confidence as an athlete will carry over into every other aspect of your life – your greatness will be obvious and your dreams will become reality.
Kali Abel
Boulder Coach
Kali has been running since her middle school years in Oregon. Prior to that she was a swimmer but quit because the pool was always too cold. Since that time, she has never looked back. In the beginning she focused primarily on 5k's and 10k's, but enjoyed long trail races best. As a 16 year old she raced in a 28-mile trail-less canyon crossing at 10,000ft in the Steens Mountain Range and a new enthusiasm for trails was born. She braved the winter temps and ran in college in Maine before heading to Montana to work and train. The pursuit of a graduate degree in glaciology at CU brought her to Boulder in 2008.
She has competed in distances from 5k through ultra-marathons and dappled in triathlons and mountain relays. Though running is her true passion, she has also been a competitive pole vaulter, rock climber and ice climber. Oh yeah and she has been known to bust out the occasional break-dance move.
Kali feels best when she is training consistently and pushing herself to the limit in competition. She is a strong believer is enjoying the goals you choose to pursue, from the training to the competing. She aims to work towards both short term and long term goals in a healthy, dedicated and enthusiastic manner and always seeks to find fun in challenge.
Simon Butterworth

A large part of the fun of Triathlon for Simon has been training and learning how best to train (he has coached himself). The rewards have been increasing success at all distances in the sport for over 12 years and, a very good understanding of the needs and limits of Age Group athletes of all levels. Prior to moving to Colorado in 2005 he worked with LI New York’s most successful coaching group, the Long Island Tri Coach and was a director of the Island’s largest Triathlon Club. In addition to coaching Triathletes and runners, Simon is running a Masters Swim Team at the Lafayette Rec Center and is a swim coach in the Louisville children’s stroke program.
Coaching Program Philosophy
Fun, Balance, Development of Body and Mind
Winning is not everything in my view but there is nothing wrong with it as a goal. Fun, health and a supportive family is much more important. My training programs are developed with those short term and long term objectives in mind. I especially enjoy working with an athlete who wants to learn as much as they can about the reasons behind a program. And, am happy to put myself out of a job over time as the athlete learns enough to self coach or work with a knowledgeable athlete to get them to the top of the sport.
Personal Background
I started life as a Cockney born on the other side of the Pond in London, England. My father, a contrarian, emigrated the family opposite the overwhelming flow from England to Ireland when he was 4. Triathlon started for me when I was given a bicycle and taught to swim by my father, a below the knee amputee. Water temps in the Atlantic average 60F or below in the summer. His example of crawling into this ice cube had a lasting effect on me and I got no slack when hinting it was too cold. In High School I discovered I could run and won the schools overall Track and Field competition in my senior year. Another big move on my own at 20 put me in NY at University. Any thoughts of returning to Ireland ended when my wife and I found each other. We lived in the NY area 30+ years with a year off when we went cruising on our 30ft sailboat that we built ourselves. Fifteen years ago the competitive spirit in sport was rekindled in Triathlon. Ingrid and I moved to the Boulder area as a “career move” after over 30 years in the Publishing and IT world respectively. The location choice was Ingrid’s, her sister is in Superior. No complaints from me, her sister and husband make good decisions (they moved from Germany five years ago).
Anna Carvill
Boulder Coach
A foot doctor once told me "Anna, you are not built to run. You are just too stocky, stick to the bike."
I made sure to pay him a visit after completing my first Leadville 50 mile trail run.
I believe everyone is built to run, cycle, swim or whatever it is they want to accomplish. My passion is training, competing and sharing the passion with other!
Some folks have a natural talent for a sport or athletics in general. I, unfortunately, lack that said talent, and have had to make up for it through diligence, focus, determination and some grit. I tend to coach in a similar way, lets take the idea of talent, put it away, and focus on training right to get us to our goals. IF talent wants to help us out on race day, great! but if not, we still know we put in the work and we can do it!
I have competed in sports for as far back as I can remember - you've seen the soccer games, where the kids are so young, they really don't even know which way they are supposed to be kicking the ball? much less the whole point, but they are having fun anyway? yeah, that was me!
Soccer, baseball, softball, tennis, boys lacrosse (there wasn't a girls team, but I was ok with that) and nordic skiing were my sports as a kid. In College I had the opportunity to race D-I nordic for Colby College in Maine.
Since then, I have done several ultras including several 50K's, a 38 mile run, and the Leadville 50 miler. I also raced in triathlons from sprint to half-ironman distances, looking to do the Ironman Cozumel Mexico this year!
I have coached in the last 6 years a range of individuals from beginners, to serious athletes looking to place in their age group categories from 5 and 10k's to marathons and triathlons and find I continue to grow and learn as a coach, mostly thanks to my athletes!
Very much looking forward to my first F4 season!
Selfishly, I love getting to be a part of someone reaching their goal, whether it is finishing a race, getting a PR, training injury free or getting on the podium!
Sarah Chimileski
Boulder Coach
Running, triathlon, rowing, pentathlon
Sarah Chimileski began her triathlon career in 1994 at the Boulder Peak Triathlon. Coming from a swimming and cycling background, with only a couple of runs under her belt, she rocked the swim and the bike, but walked the entire run. No matter, she was hooked and actually began running to improve her triathlon experiences. It worked. Since then she has completed 4 Ironmans, 7 marathons (3 of which were part of the Ironman races) and numerous other shorter distance races. Her biggest race accomplishment was her 2nd place finish in the Athena division at the 2005 Ironman Couer d’Alene. Without the typical Type-A personality that accompanies many in the sport, Sarah seems to get by with her laissez-faire training attitude and her addiction to the fun of the sport. Always up for a challenge or a good time, Sarah enjoys sharing her love of the sport with others. Her newest addictions are nordic ski racing and attempting to stay upright while mountain biking.
Jean Crowley
Boulder Coach
Running, cycling, skiing, hiking, golf, hand-eye sports
Jean has been a running coach for a few years. She enjoys working with athletes both in the group setting and one on one. She has coached programs with target races of 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon distances.
Jean enjoys all sports but has recently been concentrating on biking, golf, hiking, rock climbing and running. She enjoys competing regardless of where she finishes. Jean's philosophy is always do your best and works with each runner to help them achieve this.
Torin Dewey
Boulder Coach
Running, trail running, ultra running, marathon
Describe your own running and multisport experience/ level, including impressive results?
I’ve been running since my grandfather started running at age 57 and I was 13, and riding for even longer. I am an unabashed addict of running and cycling, but running is the more “pure” sport for me personally. I have transitioned from road to trail to longer trail (and ultra) running as the years have gone by and I’ve lost my “road speed” and decided I liked “getting lost and finding my way back” in the mountains more than pounding the pavement.
Old 10k PRs – 36:30 (5/88), 38:30 (5/99), no recent PRs
Old 1/2-Marathon PR – 1:22 (2/92), “recent” 1/2-Marathon PR – 1:29 (3/03)
Old Marathon PR – 3:01 (3/92), “recent” Marathon PR – 3:06 (12/02)
Duathlete/Triathlete ’86-’88, back when the competitive level was MUCH more reasonable!
Competitive road (’90-’92) and mountain (’96-’98) bicyclist
Ultra marathons / trail marathons – Leadville 100 (’00); Lake City 50 (’99); Liberty Trail Ultra 35M (’97); Pikes Peak Marathon (’99); Spring Desert Ultra 25M (’03, ’04, ’05, ’06, ’07, ’08); Moab-Alpine-Slickrock 50M (’04, ’05); Collegiate Peaks 25M (’00); and many others.
Other – Leadville 100 mtn. bike race (’96, ’97)
What other qualities do you bring to your group that will assist them in reaching their goals while having fun along the way?
Positive attitude and motivation are strong points. I try to be a good listener and aim to ensure that my runners make exercise a way of life and a positive part of their lives. I encourage my athletes to challenge themselves and find reward from the journey and the effort, not just “the numbers”.
Timothy Dinehart
Boulder Coach
Running, marathons, on-line training
This will be Timothy’s 9th season coaching for Scott. As part of his coaching, Timothy has prepared endurance athletes for various races including the 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon, adventure, and triathlon. Timothy is a firm believer and follower of the run-walk training strategy. He has had proven success coaching newer and returning runners to new heights. Being a father of two and an “aspiring and perspiring” distance runner, Timothy understands the difficulties of fitting a training schedule into an already full life. He will take time to understand your goals and constraints to create the best possible training solution so that you will learn how to spend your valuable training time doing the things you need to do to achieve your goal. As a Personal Goal Coach, Timothy will focus on on-line run training.
Randy Evans
Boulder Coach
Running, Duathlon, Triathlon
Randy Evans discovered a passion for running early in life, always blessed with a set of wheels, duathlon came naturally, a love of nature and the ocean presaged a chance encounter during a collegiate criterium bike race when a conversation with a fellow racer shared an experience from the previous years’ Ironman Hawaii …the Triathlon seed was planted.
Having qualified for and completed multiple Boston Marathons, raced in Olympic, Ironman 70.3, and Ironman Triathlon World Championship events, Randy knows what it takes to achieve his “two objectives in regards to racing, first, get to the Start Line healthy, secondly get to the Finish Line healthy!”
Experienced in the act of balancing life’s personal and professional demands, his coaching philosophy is simple and straightforward, set a goal (helps motivate and get you out the door), commit to that goal (look in the mirror and make yourself a promise to follow through), identify the tools necessary to achieve your goal (love and support of family and friends, equipment and skills essential to the task) and compile a team of experts to support your quest.
As a USAT Certified Coach, Randy has coached novice and seasoned athletes to safely and successfully achieve their goals.
Steve Gibson
Boulder Coach
Steve brings five seasons of coaching and over 25 years of competition to FastForward's 2009 triathlon program. He completed his first half-marathon as a high school junior way back in 1981, his first triathlon in 1994, and has been an active runner and triathlete ever since. Along the way, he's experienced the highs and lows that make distance events so memorable, from personal bests including a 3:12 marathon and sub-18 minute 5K (back when he had hair), to races along the rim of Crater Lake and down Wall Street wearing a suit, to the "fun" of a wetsuit-less triathlon in San Francisco Bay and an overnight vomit-fest at the 24-hours of Triathlon. Most recently, having focused his effort and training, he completed Ironman Coeur d'Alene in 12:42, over 90 minutes faster than his first attempt at the 140.6 mile distance in 2005.
For Steve, the intersection of the mental and physical aspects of competing -- and training -- as a triathlete provide a rare and precious opportunity to learn what you're capable of, not just as an athlete, but as a person. As a coach, he's had particular success with individuals who were competing for the first time or at a new and longer distance, as well as those who've sought to challenge themselves in a new, and often faster, way. While his athletes frequently find themselves working harder (especially on hill workouts) than those around them, they also tend to laugh more and stress less. But most important to him is that every single one of his competitors who've lined up at the start line have made it to the finish line.
Steve lives in Boulder with his wife Anne and 3-year old son Spencer, who aspires to complete his own first race this summer. A graduate of Princeton University who began his career as an economist, he spends his days as the COO of the National Institute for Trial Advocacy.
Sunny Gilbert
Boulder Coach
Running, triathlon
Sunny has been running for over 13 years, which is to say that she has been a runner for over half her life. What began as a way to meet people in a brand new high school, quickly turned into a passion as she established herself in the rank and file of the local running community of St. Louis, MO. A series of All-State performances in Missouri, landed her a spot on the track and field team at the University of Missouri, Columbia, where she earned All-American honors and a lifetime of memories. After graduating from college and a move to Boulder, CO for graduate school, she began training for triathlon, quickly making the transition from a speedy 800m runner to an endurance athlete who loves to stack up the miles.
Game for anything, she brings a smile and a plethora of colorful Midwestern idioms to her training. She coached the CU triathlon team for two years, to two consecutive National Collegiate Team Championships, earning the title of “Godmother” from her athletes, and also writes workouts for several of her friends. People who know her, know of her easy humor and down-to-earth approach to sports…and she is tall.
Athletic Accomplishments:
NCAA Woman of the Year Finalist 2001
NCAA Div I National Champion, indoor track
MU school record holder
Inside Triathlon and Triathlete Magazine’s Female Amateur Triathlete of the Year 2004
2004 Amateur National Champion

Julie Hudetz
Boulder Coach
Running, cycling, triathlon, adventure racing, pentathlon, snowshoeing
Julie Hudetz has been an athlete for as long as she can remember. She ran her first 3 mile race at age 7. In high school she was a state champion cross country and track runner and held the state record in the 3000m with a time of 9:55. Moving to Boulder in 1987, she intended to start racing triathlons, but instead decided to focus on bike racing. That focus paid off as she was able to race professionally for Team Saturn. She raced on the US National Team and was 6th at the 2000 Olympic Trials. After 2000, she chose to stay closer to home and rediscovered running. Her diverse athletic background led her into adventure racing.
She enjoys the variety of multi-sport racing and continues to compete in a many different types of races. She especially enjoys the Mt. Taylor Quadrathlon where she has placed 3rd and 5th. She also won the Steamboat Pentathlon in 2004. In the winter, she races for the Atlas Snowshoe Team. In addition to her love for sports, her greatest love is her 6 year old daughter who has been going to races since she was eight weeks old. Julie is enthusiastic about staying active and being outdoors. She enjoys sharing her passion and knowledge with others, helping her clients reach their goals!
Stephanie Jackman
Boulder Coach
Running, marathon, rock climbing, elementary school Principal
Running keeps me happy, healthy and full of energy. Although I have been running for over 12 years, I found that I tend to “warm-up” after running for an hour or so and became addicted to racing long distances when I moved to Colorado in 1996. To date I have run 7 marathons, tons of half-marathons, and numerous 10ks. I’ve run Boston twice which is quite an experience, but can’t wait to help a group of runners reach their running and racing goals this season. Right now I am seriously training for another type of race, a principal job at an elementary school; however; I will be ready for those long runs every Saturday with a dynamic and committed group. My goal this season is to help others continue to dig deep while running hour after hour and cross the finish line (whatever race it might be) with a smile on their face and a PR in their pocket.
Julie "JJ" Johnson
Boulder Coach
Running, marathons, 5K, 10K
As a F4 athlete I’ve covered the distance: Four marathon, two Half Ironman Triathlon, and countless 5K & 10Ks and sprint triathlon. I translate what I have learned as a F4 member into a no-nonsense coaching approach for beginner to intermediate runners.
As your coach, I will share with you my journey: A story of one girl’s dislike for running turned into passion. I do not measure success by always meeting goals or beating times, I measure success by what we learn along the way (granted meeting goals and beating times does feel good). Training as a journey. The steps between signing up for a race and race day need to be celebrated!
2009 marks my hiatus from coaching; although I will be riding alongside you as a F4 Bike Guide. I’m in “training” right now as I plan my upcoming wedding. I’m confident I will be fully prepared to “toe the line” in September, as I start the most important “race” of my life: MARRIAGE!
Ben Kadlec
Boulder Coach
Ben first started running to get in shape for ice hockey season in North Dakota and as an opportunity meet ladies (i.e., his wife Sara!). He now enjoys running all distances from 5k to marathon and frequently competes in races on both road and trail. Ben raced in the NCCA for 2 years on the University of Minnesota cycling team prior to moving to Boulder. He recently finished his PhD in computer science and is in his second year with Fast Forward Sports. When not running or biking, Ben is an avid backcountry telemark skier and enjoys going on overseas adventures.
Sara Kadlec
Boulder Coach
Run, Bike, Track
Sara fell in love with running at a young age. She started with summer track meets at the age of 6, where running one lap around the track felt like an eternity. She has since completed 3 marathons, countless 10ks and 5ks, and has even experimented with the triathlon and biking scenes. As a competitive runner and triathlete in college, she learned from and trained with some very knowledgeable athletes and coaches. Over the years, she has also had the opportunity to coach in many aspects, including a summer track program for kids and being an indoor cycling instructor. Through her experiences, her passion for running has gone beyond competing. Her philosophy is that running is a way to feel good about what you’re doing for yourself, enjoy the outdoors, relieve stress, meet wonderful people, stay healthy, strive toward a goal, and have a blast! Sara encourages her athletes to stay positive and work to reach their fullest potential through smart training and living a healthy lifestyle.
Michael Kelly
Boulder Coach
Triathlon, Duathlon, Xterra, Running
Athletic Background
Michael only got into sports after graduating college, so he appreciates that not everyone has a lifetime of athletic experience behind them. In more than a decade of racing, he taken on everything from Sprint to Ironman, XTerra, Duathlons and even a 24 hour Team Triathlon event. His favorite distance is the Half-Ironman because it's the perfect balance of going long without spending all day at it.
Coaching Philosophy
The most important thing to recognize is that racing isn't about winning races, or even winning your age group; it's not about winning in the traditional sense at all. It's about setting goals, recognizing success, and realizing that confidence as an athlete will carry over into every other aspect of your life. Train Smart, Race Hard, and Have Fun!
Ivy Koger
Boulder Coach
Running, cycling, triathlon, mountain biking
Ivy Koger did his first 10K when he was 6 years old. He ran a 1:10. When he was 8, he ran a 57, getting 2nd place in the 12-and-under division of The Fiddler’s Frolickin’ Footrace in Halletsville, Texas. Upon reaching Middle School in Austin, TX, Ivy turned to the short stuff, running the 110 and 300 hurdles, long jump and triple jump. In high school, he also swam the 100 Butterfly. It was in college, at age 19, that Ivy “re”-discovered distance athletics, and it wasn’t long until Triathlon found him in 1993.
Ivy worked his way through college as a bicycle mechanic, working for Austin Tri-Cyclist, a pioneering retail store for the sport of triathlon. While working there, Ivy expanded his horizons to 24-hour mountain bike races, a 50K trail run, and even Ironman races in Switzerland and Coeur D’Alene, ID. (get him to tell you his Ironman story on a long run someday) Ivy’s greatest passion was found in a cross between Triathlon and Mountain Biking – the Xterra series. Ivy was Central Regional Champion for Xterra in 2000 and 2001, and has qualified 5 times and competed 4 times in the World Championships in Maui. It was an Off-road Ironman in Rifle, CO, that brought Ivy to Boulder (the race eventually got cancelled). Since then, he has continued to follow his passions in Triathlon and coaching distance runners up to half marathon, triathlons up to Half-Ironman, and 3 winter seasons coaching for the Steamboat Pentathlon.
Megan Kram
Boulder Coach
Megan is thrilled to be coaching this spring! She will work hard to help her runners achieve their goals, and aims to have her runners look forward to and feel energized after F4 runs. She believes that group runs should be as fun and social as they are challenging. And as for races, she wants each runner to “give it his/her all” and feel great about his/her performance.
A native Michigander, Megan has lived in Boulder for four years. She has been running for over 20 years (and wonders how this is possible), sometimes competitively but mostly for sanity and fitness. Once upon a time she ran a 5:30 one-mile. Her best race in recent years was a 1:17 ten-miler.
Pam Landry
Boulder Coach
Running, Marathon, Triathlon, Sport Psychology
As a native Bostonian, Pam's progression as an endurance athlete began with a lifelong love affair with sports at an early age, which set the groundwork for her twenty five year coaching and health education career. As an adult, the thrill of team sports gradually developed into a different appreciation of the quiet peace and solitude found in long distance running and swimming. To date, Pam has completed fourteen marathons and countless half marathons, triathlons and shorter distance events and values her long term role as an athlete mentor and coach. She enjoys the discipline, challenges, and opportunities for self-discovery found in consistent training and personal competition, regardless of finishing times.
With a Masters degree in Sport Psychology, Pam also consults with individual athletes of all abilities to develop the mental component of each athlete's training as well as the physical. She also presents applied sport psychology seminars and workshops for area corporate wellness programs, teaching participants how to incorporate sport psychology concepts and strategies for improved performance in a variety of life contexts.
Pam looks forward to every F4 training season where she promises to bring her unique experiences as an athlete, coach, teacher, and mentor to team members, and to help them to develop a lifelong love of movement, competition, sport and personal accomplishments. She lives by Eleanor Roosevelt's words that "You must do the thing you think you cannot do", and teaches others how to do the same….with lots of fun along the way.
Mark Loehr
Boulder Coach
Mark discovered running and fitness back in 2005 and was hooked from his first Bolder Boulder training season. He is truly a product of Fast Forward training! Mark participated in Fast Forward’s very first season with the Philly Half Marathon and has continued to participate in each season since then. When Triathlon training started a year later, he was hesitant but excited to “give it a try”. Like his running experience in 05, he was hooked. Completing several Sprint and Olympic distance races, he decided to join Fast Forward’s first Ironman training season (even before completing a Half Ironman). What a great experience! Now, Ironman AZ is on tap for late 2009.
Mark is a USAT certified coach and NASM Personal Trainer. If you ask him why he is coaching, he’ll tell you one thing “to help others realize their full potential, period”. It is all about the journey, making it fun and educational is the key to making the starting line fit and ready to race. “Just Press Play!”
Major Races:
Bolder Boulder 2005 – 2008, Philadelphia Half Marathon 2005, Phoenix Half Marathon 2006, 5430 Tri Series races, Marine Corp Marathon 2006, Canyonlands Half Marathon 2007, Rodney Miller Tri 2007, Harvest Moon Long Course 2007, New York Marathon 2007, Buffalo Springs 70.3 2008, Ironman Madison 2008, The Other Half – Moab 2008.
Dean Maruna

After competing for high school cross country, swimming, and track teams she ran cross country and track at Centre College in Kentucky. The summer before college she did her first triathlon which sparked her desire to do them every summer there after. Her athletic and academic achievements and civic contributions in college made her NCAA Kentucky woman of the Year (2000) and the state’s representative at the national ceremony. Following college, she spent 2 years as an assistant coach for DePauw University’s cross country and track programs in Indiana. As an English instructor in Grenoble, France, following coaching in Indiana, she had the opportunity to train with and race nationally for the Grenoble University Club. Since arriving in Boulder, Amanda has coached for several organizations for runners and triathletes, including Boulder High. Amanda is also a certified massage therapist. Her marathon experiences include the Marine Corps, Boston, Phoenix, and Vegas. Mental preparation is a key element that she likes to focus on with her athletes. She is passionate about her athletic endeavors and looks forward to opportunities sharing with others how one can improve the quality of one’s life by passionately pursuing a goal.
Caleb Melamed
Boulder Coach
Running, Nordic skiing, marathon, heart rate training
Caleb was born and raised outside Nederland, CO, where the Indian Peaks Wilderness served as his backyard. Growing up ski racing Caleb learned to love and appreciate the beauty and power of the mountains. After burning out on ski racing after a brief stint on the CU ski team Caleb taught him self to telemark ski and quickly garnered several awards, movie and magazine appearances and sponsors. But the endurance sport bug bit Caleb when a couple friends talked him into entering the Leadville 100 running race. In Caleb’s first attempt he made it only half way, but it was too late and Caleb became hooked on running. 25 pounds lighter Caleb attempted Leadville again the following year, this time making it 85 miles before his legs simply quit working.
Burnt out on skiing and hooked on running Caleb decided to try something a bit shorter and figured the marathon was perfect. At this time he also bought his first heart monitor and a simple how to train for a marathon book. Caleb was amazed at how quickly he improved. In his first marathon Caleb set a still standing PR of 3:03:30.
Hooked on endurance sports and heart rate based training Caleb figured it was time to merge his two passions – skiing and running – and figured Nordic ski racing was the perfect fit. He has competed in the American Birkenbiener (the country’s largest Nordic ski race, a 51KM ski marathon) for the past three years, qualifying for the prestigious elite wave in his first race. He has seen his results improve from 220th place in his first race to 134th last year.
Caleb started coaching with Scott in the summer of 2004 and quickly fell in love with sharing his passion for endurance sports with other runners. He brings a sense of humor, humility, and approachability to his coaching. He believes strongly in the power of the individual to achieve amazing results. Caleb believes the process of training for endurance sports includes; learning about your body, testing the limits of your body, taking time to enjoy and celebrate your achievements and always taking note of the beauty we are so lucky to be able live and train in. Of course having fun is also central to Caleb’s coaching philosophy.
Matt Nolan
Boulder Coach
Hi!! I'm Matt Nolen and I really, really like to run. I suppose I started running sometime with I was in middle school and carried on into high school. I did not start training seriously until 2005 but have been going full speed ahead ever since. Other than running fast, my goals are to remain as healthy and injury free as possible and to help other find a joy and love to running similar to mine. Outside of running I enjoy several outdoor sports; including, skiing, whitewater kayaking, and rock climbing. I also like sitting on the porch in the morning and drinking a good coffee.

Seth Portner
Boulder Coach
Running, trail running, ultra running
Trail running is my passion. Being on the trails, alone or with a group, gives me the perspective I need to do my other job working for the environment. No trail run is ever the same. There is always something distinct. I hope to convey some of my enthusiasm for trail running to Fast Forward Athletes.
Some beginning trail runners are hesitant because they worry that running on the rugged terrain will be too hard. The usually quickly learn to love trail running. Compared to the pavement, trails are much easier on the body. Dirt is softer than concrete and the uneven terrain requires runners to use their core strength, balance and agility, allowing a better and more well-rounded workout. Also the repetition of road running is broken up with a diversity of surfaces and terrain.
I have been running in Boulder since 1993 and am very familiar with our trails. Certain trails are better suited to specific workouts. In the trail running group we meet at various trailheads around the county and focus on trail-specific skills such as downhill running, cornering, and trail etiquette in addition to the more standard drills of speed, strength and endurance.

Running, cycling, triathlon, mountain biking
Moreno has over fifteen years of experience training runners, cyclists, and wheelchair athletes. He has coached clients who want to just finish an event to clients that want to win. His clients have won national, world and Olympic championships. His educational background, a degree in kinesiology and masters in sport psychology, provide him with the ability to bring out the best in his clients.

Running, triathlon, marathons
Played good old mid western sports (softball, basketball, flag football) up till I discovered triathlon (circa 2000). I’ve done 7 marathons to date not including IM's: Dallas White Rock in '98, San Antonio in '99, Chicago in 2000 and 2001, Boston in 2002, Austin and Sacramento in 2004. I’ve completed 2 Ironman races, several Half IM races and lots of Olympic Distance; including Nationals (was an alternate for the US team in 2002. Fastest Half Marathon to date is 1:31:25 at Moab, Fastest Marathon is 3:24 something in Sacramento, Fastest 10K is 42 and change last year at Boulder Peak, and fastest 5K is a 19:50, I’ve recently done a few Xterras and am interested in doing more.
I’d like to do more cycling races and maybe even someday a mtn biking race. I’ll do IM again in 2006. I’m applying to med school currently, but don't really want to leave Boulder so who knows I may stay and either go here or apply to PA school here or something. Stay tuned…

Michael Stone
Boulder Coach
Triathlon, Rock Climbing, Running
Michael Stone, 38, is a Nine-Time Ironman Finisher including Hawaii in addition to numerous Half Ironmans and Olympic Distance races. What makes Michael unique is he does NOT come from an athletic background. He was very intimidated by endurance sports and found comfort in such activities as rock climbing and martial arts. After running his first 10K he was hooked!! Within a year Michael took on an Olympic Distance Triathlon and was further bitten by the “tri bug”. He then took on a Half Ironman and then Ironman. All of this happened within his first two years of entering this sport.
Michael’s racing and training experience has helped form his coaching philosophy. He has learned from sport’s best coaches. He strives to find the “inner-athlete” in all of us. He primarily takes on athletes with challenges. These challenges can be physical or emotional. Using sport as a medium to gain both fitness and self-confidence forms Michael’s coaching style.
Although Michael has enough sight to race without assistance, he does battle vision issues and can relate well to those with physical challenges. He endeavors to help those with such challenges make their dreams come true.
As a USAT Certified Coach, Michael currently works with approximately 16 athletes that range from Sprint Distance to Ironman triathletes. He has made his living as a Hotel/Resort and Spa developer and Owner, but follows his passion of triathlon and strongly desires to pass his experience on to others. Michael lives in Boulder, Colorado.
Dan Sturgis, PhD
Boulder Coach
Running, trail running, marathon, triathlon
Dan is also known as the running philosopher. His approach to coaching as well as his own running is that improvements in performance should be integrated into success in one’s life. Running should not be separate from one’s “real” life, but rather something that contributes to it. A personal best should reflect a new level of personal development, not just athletic fitness. Although fond of discussing theories of running he also likes to coach by example.
If you want a coach who will not only offer you positive encouragement on your mile repeats but get out there and run them with you, then Dan could be the coach for you. His favorite distance is the marathon and has a personal best 2:55 (Not bad, for a former two pack-a-day smoker.) His favorite race is Imogene Pass. He has coached for Bobby McGee’s Magical Runners as well as the Bolder Boulder Training Club.
Matt Anderson
Denver Coach
While a relatively late bloomer to the world of running, Matt has developed a life long passion for the sport. With approximately 10 years of running under his belt and a countless number of 5 and 10K races, his love for running transitioned to a true addition when he trained for and participated in his first endurance races. His philosophy on running is based on having fun, challenging your preconceived notions about what you can accomplish, and ultimately meeting the goals that you set for yourself. Furthermore he believes that running can help create balance in your life, no matter how busy you find yourself!

Denver Coach
Running, Strength Conditioning
This year will be my first as a coach (actually an assistant, but who is counting?). I have been a participant in running groups for the last seven years, and have been a member of F4 since its inception. I have participated in three half marathons and several 5K, 7K, and 10K races over that time. I recently completed a six month course study in personal training and became a certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association in December of 2006.
As a runner I have experienced the fear, excitement, pain, exhilaration of completing something larger than myself and can honestly say it has changed me in ways I didn’t think possible. All it takes is that first step, if you are reading this, you are already there. Whether you are here to run your first 10K, lose a few extra pounds or just to meet some motivated, fun people, you will not regret your choice to join this running group. I know, I keep coming back myself! I look forward to helping you achieve your goals, find comfort in discomfort and to have some fun.
Mike Hronick
Denver Coach
Running, Strength Conditioning
Mike began running almost 16 years ago, joining his high school’s cross country and track teams his junior year. He enjoyed it so much that he continued to participate in both sports at the collegiate level, competing in cross country, the 5000m run, and the 3000m steeplechase for Truman State University, a NCAA Division II program. Following college, he belonged to the Fleet Feet Chicago Racing team. He has competed in numerous road races and completed four marathons - Chicago (twice), Philadelphia, and Outer Banks North Carolina.
Mike has also learned a great deal about running shoes, apparel, and accessories after having worked for four different running specialty stores. He got his first taste of formal coaching with the Bolder Boulder Training Club in 2003 under the supervision of Scott Fliegelman. He joined FastForward Sports as an assistant coach in the spring of 2008 and is looking forward to working with the Thursday night group for the summer and fall 2008 season.
In addition to running, Mike enjoys procuring injuries from mountain biking, alpine skiing, and numerous other sports. His wife Kelly is a competitive runner and also coaches for FastForward.

Brian Klink
Denver Coach
Brian will manages all coaches and athletes in FastForward’s Denver Programs, and will work closely with Scott to develop training schedules and workout locations that are challenging and fun. This summer, Brian will also serve as Head Coach for the Denver Marathon Training Team- powered by FastForward.
At age 8, Brian’s running career began with a newly-created grass “track” in his backyard. His dad challenged, “Run 13 times around, Brian, and you’ll get a special prize!” Totally unprepared for the rapid progression of Brian’s endurance sport career, his dad received a phone call from Brian’s mom that very same day: “Joel, you better get that prize ready. Brian’s already run his first mile!” A couple of days later, Brian received his first of many running awards, a small trophy with the inscription, “Brian – 1 Mile.”
Since that humble beginning in small-town Wisconsin, Brian has been running for over 30 years, over 20 of those years as a competitive runner, including high school cross-country and track and college cross-country. A pilot for a major airline, Brian understands the challenges of integrating a fulfilling fitness program into a full-time career and family life. With his very warm and friendly personality, Brian has a special ability to put the science and physiology of endurance sport into easily understandable language that can be applied to a busy, work-a-day lifestyle.
Intimately familiar with the many aches and pains of running, Brian moved into cross-training which inevitably led to triathlon, qualifying for the USAT National Age Group Championship in 2005. Brian is also an avid winter multi-sport enthusiast – a competitive snowshoer and Nordic skier, as well as a downhill ski nut.
See Brian Klinkkick off the Team Denver Marathon Training season on CBS 4.
Sean O’Neill
Denver Coach
Sean’s athletic background began in college, where he walked on to the swim team. He loved endurance training and sports and went on to get a master’s degree in Exercise Physiology from East Carolina University. Following a move to Colorado he raced bikes for 3 years.
After an injury and career change he found that he had too much time on his hands, and a healthy hip again. So 5 years ago he entered a local sprint triathlon and was hooked. Since then he has been racing triathlons (with the occasional bike race and running event) and focusing on the sprint and Olympic distances.
He enjoys getting back to his athletic and education background and helping others achieve their racing and training goals.
Carrie Packard
Denver Coach
Running, “cheerleading”
As a coach, I try to make every workout as fun as possible – just ask any of my previous participants. I am sure they will make one of the following comments regarding their training experience:
• That girl had to be a cheerleader in high school – no one has that much energy
• How can someone talk that much at OD and LT?
• She even made the track workouts fun
A team athlete my entire upbringing (and never a cheerleader), I found there was little use for field hockey after college, so I started running, and I ran alone all the time. When I decided to train for my first marathon, I joined a group, fairly apprehensive, as my running was “my time;” but I grabbed my friend and we plunged into marathon training. At the first workout, we noticed a runner struggling a bit in the back, so we turned back to cheer him on. From then on I became the cheerleader/coach – gently pushing runners to reach their personal goals. Much to my surprise, I liked doing that, and looked forward to the group runs more than being on my own.
My role is to help the beginner/intermediate runner achieve their running goals – whether it is a first 5 or 10K, overcoming a fear of speedwork, or getting someone through their first marathon, at any pace! Over the last seven years I have had the pleasure of helping hundreds of participants achieve their goals and look forward to working with you!
Mary Presecan
Denver Coach
In 1999 I participated in my first marathon, the last quarter of which I spent thinking to myself, “Is it legal to swim a portion of this marathon? What I wouldn’t give to be able to jump in this water I am running along?” Having participated in my first swim meet at age 4 ½ it was no surprise I turned to the water for comfort. It was also no surprise that I turned to triathlon soon after that marathon finish.
Like most triathletes the first race was a sprint distance race, Austin Danskin to be exact. I spent the months leading up to it worried about my training and wondering if I was putting in enough work to get me ready for the race. Race day finally arrived, and before I even made it to T1 I was mentally signing up for my next race – I was hooked.
Since that first triathlon in 1999 I have participated in some great events including: Boulder Peak, 5430 ½ iron distance, Napa Valley ½ iron distance, Wildflower, Steelhead 70.3, Buffalo Springs Lake 70.3, 70.3 World Championships in Clearwater, Florida, and the personal highlight of them all in 2007 at Ford Ironman Wisconsin.
Through the hours of training and intense race situations I have come to learn a number of things about myself. Working out and being in shape makes me happy, helps me to build self confidence, and makes the other challenges in life just easier. I have also learned that anything is possible, as long as I put in the work. Finally, I have come to realize the athletic advantage of mental strength. As a FastForward coach it is these lessons I hope to share in an environment that encourages community, self growth, and fun.

Patti Thurman
Denver Coach
I have been running for all of my adult life. I joined with Scott F in 2003 for BolderBoulder training, and that was the beginning of my distance running. I have done 4 marathons, 5 half marathons, and lots of races with distances between 2k and 10 mile, and just did my first triathlon! I discovered that I love the discipline and camaraderie of training with a group, and have grown and learned much with F4. I wanted to give back to the sport I love, and am so fortunate to be able to coach. I am first and foremost an F4 athlete. Having had to take an unexpected break from running due to an injury, I am joyful to be able to run every day. I want to help bring that passion and dedication to others, and am still constantly learning from my athletes. It has been incredibly rewarding to meet new runners, and have them set and achieve goals far greater than they ever thought they could do.

Remote Online Personal Goal Coaching Running, motherhood
Jamie has been working with beginner and intermediate runners all striving to push their personal limits from 10k to marathons since 2001. As a Fast Forward coach, she co-coaches with her husband Steve, allowing her to balance her love for her 2 kids (soon to be 3) and coaching.
Jamie takes distance coaching to another level. She focuses on motivation techniques and proper training balance. She's tuned into her runners, regardless of ability, anticipating their training needs and helping find practical solutions, even for beginning runners who aren't always sure what questions to ask.
